I strongly oppose Governor LePage’s proposals to decimate our environmental protection laws. He wants to lower air and water pollution standards, allow toxic chemicals back into children’s toys and baby bottles, rezone 3 million acres of wilderness for sprawling development, make Maine people pay for disposal of dangerous electronic waste and reduce fines for corporate polluters.
He claims this attack on our environment would help business, but damaging Maine’s clean environment and quality of place would actually harm many of Maine’s most important industries, like tourism and outdoor recreation. Furthermore, a recent Maine Public Radio report found that backing for his proposals didn’t come from Maine businesses but in fact came from out-of-state chemical companies.
Please oppose these changes. Tell Governor LePage that this is not how we do business in Maine.
ETA: Great letter to the editor in the KJ from Jonathan Robbins of Whitefield. I don’t know Mr. Robbins, but he has written a wonderful letter: “Just as dog-walkers on the Rail Trail have a responsibility to pick up the wastes their activity produces, businesses have a responsibility to clean up the waste they produce. But some dog-walkers and some businesses leave their mess for others to experience and clean up. Regulations develop because not everybody feels a sense of social obligation to their community.”
